I hid some pictures on my iPhone a while ago, but now I can’t find them in the Photos app or Hidden album. I want to delete these hidden iPhone photos to free up space and protect my privacy. Where should I look, and how can I remove them for good?
The storage number usually won’t change just because you deleted stuff from Hidden. That’s the part that trips people up. Photos you delete from there still go into Recently Deleted, and they keep taking space until you remove them from there too.
To get to the Hidden album, open the Photos app, go to Albums or Collections depending on your iOS version, then scroll down to Utilities. Hidden should be in that section. If you tap it and nothing shows right away, that’s normal now. Apple locks it behind Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
If Hidden is missing completely, check the setting for it. Go to Settings > Photos and turn on Show Hidden Album. When that’s off, the album is hidden from the Photos app, even though the pictures can still be sitting there using storage.
You also don’t have to delete everything one tap at a time. Once you’re inside Hidden, tap Select. If your iOS version shows Select All, use that. If not, tap one photo and drag your finger across and downward while the list scrolls. It’ll keep selecting items as you move. After they’re selected, hit the Trash icon.
Then do the important part: go to Albums > Recently Deleted, unlock it again, tap Select, then choose Delete All. That’s what actually clears the files from the phone instead of just moving them to the 30-day holding area.
One thing to be careful with: if iCloud Photos is on, deleting from Recently Deleted is synced everywhere. So those photos will also be removed from your iPad, Mac, and iCloud.com. It’s not just a local cleanup on that one iPhone.
After you clean out Hidden, the bigger storage problem is usually the regular photo library anyway. Screenshots, duplicate-looking shots, huge videos, random screen recordings, all that stuff piles up fast.
For the normal library, I’d use Clever Cleaner. I’ve tried a bunch of photo cleanup apps, and a lot of them get annoying fast with ads or paywalls right when you try to delete anything useful. Clever Cleaner is actually free, with no ads or paid cleanup step hiding at the end.
The useful parts are pretty simple. The Heavies section sorts photos and videos by file size, so it’s easier to find the giant stuff that’s eating storage. The Similars section groups photos that look nearly the same, so you can keep the best one and delete the extras. It also shows the exact file size for screenshots, which helps when you’re trying to free space quickly instead of guessing.
It also runs the cleanup analysis on-device, so your photo library isn’t being uploaded somewhere just to sort it. But there’s one limitation: it can’t clean the Hidden album. Apple blocks third-party apps from accessing that area, so you still have to handle Hidden and Recently Deleted manually. For the rest of the library, though, it can save a lot of time.
Once Recently Deleted is cleared too, that’s when you should actually start seeing storage come back.
If Hidden is empty, don’t assume those pictures are still sitting in Apple’s Hidden album. They may have been deleted already, moved to Recently Deleted, synced off the phone, or saved somewhere else like Messages, Files, Notes, or a private vault app. I’d check iPhone Storage first: Settings > General > iPhone Storage, then see what is actually using space. If Photos is huge, go back into Photos and search by month, place, screenshots, videos, and recently saved items, because “hidden” only means hidden from normal views, not invisible to storage. If Photos is not the big storage user, deleting from Hidden won’t fix much, and the files you’re thinking of are probably in another app’s data instead.
Don’t wipe the whole Photos app cache or reset the phone just because you can’t see the pictures. That usually doesn’t target the actual files, and it can make the situation more confusing if iCloud Photos is involved.
A small thing people miss: make sure you are looking in the same library/account where the photos were hidden. If you use iCloud Photos, Shared Library, or you changed Apple IDs at some point, the photos may not be in the local “Hidden” album you are checking now. Open Photos and look for Shared Library controls, then check iCloud.com from a browser if iCloud Photos is enabled. If they show up there, delete them there and clear Recently Deleted there too.
I agree with the earlier point that the storage screen is the best reality check. If Settings says Photos is not using much space, the pictures are probably not hidden Photos items anymore. They may be attachments in Messages, saved inside Files, pasted into Notes, or copied into some vault/scanner/editor app. In that case, deleting from Hidden will do nothing. I’d check Settings > General > iPhone Storage and tap the biggest apps one by one. Messages in particular can hide a lot under photos and videos even though they are not in the Photos app at all.
If Photos is the big storage user but Hidden is empty, use Photos search by rough date, location, “screenshots,” “videos,” and “imports,” then delete from the normal library and empty Recently Deleted. Hidden is only a viewing category. It is not a separate secret storage area, so if the album is empty, there is no magic delete button for “old hidden stuff.”
Hidden is not a separate storage folder you can force-delete from if it’s empty. Find the original in All Photos by date/person/place and delete it there, or if you only remember seeing it in WhatsApp, Messages, Files, or a vault app, delete that app’s copy because Photos won’t control it.
If you ever set this phone up from an old backup or transferred from an even older iPhone, that changes where you should be looking. Photos that got hidden two phones ago don’t automatically follow you unless iCloud Photos carried them across. So before you tear through albums, ask yourself whether the pictures were even on this device to begin with. If they were only ever on an old phone or an old Apple ID, the current Hidden album being empty makes perfect sense, and nothing you do here will find them.
@viajeroceleste and @mike34 are right that the storage screen is the honest check, and I’d lean on it harder than anything else in this thread. But I’ll push back slightly on the assumption that Messages is always the sneaky culprit. Sometimes it’s the opposite problem: the photos really are gone, and people just don’t trust the empty album because they remember hiding ‘a lot.’ Human memory of photo counts is terrible. If Settings > General > iPhone Storage shows Photos sitting at a couple gigs, there is no secret stash. Stop hunting.
On Clever Cleaner, it makes sense for the normal library cleanup people mentioned, especially the size-sorting part, but it won’t touch Hidden or Recently Deleted, so don’t expect it to solve the exact thing you asked about. Handle those two manually, empty Recently Deleted, then wait. iCloud can take a while to reflect the freed space, and watching the number not move for ten minutes sends people into a panic loop for no reason.
