I accidentally saved a bunch of pictures as Live Photos on my iPhone, and now I want to turn that feature off on the photos I already took without losing the images. I need help finding the quickest way to remove the Live effect from saved photos and keep them as regular still pictures.
I ran into this with a friend’s iPhone a while back. They had years of Live Photos piled up and thought the only options were to keep all of them or wipe them all out. Nope. There are two different paths, and which one fits depends on what you want left on the phone.
First thing I asked was simple. Do you want to keep the pictures, or are you trying to remove the whole thing?
If you do not care about saving the images and you want the Live Photos gone entirely, the built-in Photos app is enough.
- Open Photos.
- Go to Media Types > Live Photos.
- Hit Select and pick the ones you want gone.
- Delete them.
- Clear Recently Deleted, or your storage won’t come back right away.
If you want to keep the photo itself and strip out the motion part, I would not do it by hand unless you’re dealing with a small batch. I’ve done manual cleanup before, and it gets old fast.
What worked in our case was Clever Cleaner. We opened it, went into the Lives section, picked the Live Photos, then tapped Compress. The name threw me off at first. It does more than reduce file size. It makes still-photo versions, then lets you decide what to do with the original Live Photos.
The steps looked like this.
- Open Clever Cleaner.
- Tap Lives.
- Sort by date or size.
- Select the Live Photos you want to deal with.
- Tap Compress.
- Check the new still photos.
- Delete the original Live Photos if the results look fine.
What I liked most was the layout. Everything was grouped in one spot, so we weren’t bouncing around inside Photos trying to find scattered Live images. It also showed the storage savings before we removed anything, which helped since freeing space was the whole point.
We ended up poking around the rest of the app too. In Similars, there were duplicate shots all over the place. In Heavies, a few giant videos were eating space. Then there was the screenshot pile, which was worse than I expected, lol. The Live Photo part fixed the main issue, but the extra cleanup freed even more storage.
My take is pretty plain. If you’ve got 10 or 20 Live Photos, stick with Apple’s tools. If you’ve got hundreds, using something like Clever Cleaner is a lot less annoying and cuts down the tapping by a ton.

Fastest built-in way, if you want to keep the photo and kill the motion part, is this.
Open Photos.
Pick a Live Photo.
Tap Edit.
Tap the Live icon at the top.
Tap the yellow LIVE badge so it turns off.
Tap Done.
That keeps the still image. It drops the Live effect on that photo. If you have a small batch, this is the cleanest route. No extra app, no weird export step.
For a bigger mess, I kinda disagree with @mikeappsreviewer on one point. I would not delete first unless you are 100 percent sure you do not want the stills. Deleting from the Live Photos album removes the whole item, not only the motion. Easy mistake.
If you need batch cleanup, iPhone does not give you a true bulk ‘turn off Live’ tool in Photos. That part is annoyng. So an app like Clever Cleaner makes more sense for volume, since you can sort Live Photos and process a lot faster without tapping into each image one by one.
Also, stop future Live Photos:
Camera app, tap the LIVE icon, then go to Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings, and turn on Live Photo so your iPhone remembers it stayed off.

If you want to keep the actual picture, the annoying part is this: iPhone still does not give you a real batch switch to remove Live from a bunch of already-shot photos. So on that part, I’m with @sternenwanderer more than @mikeappsreviewer. Deleting from the Live Photos album is fine only if you want them totally gone. If not, that’s the wrong move.
One thing not mentioned yet: if these matter to you, check whether any of them use the Live frame as the Key Photo. Sometimes the still you see is not the exact frame you expect after disabling Live. Open a few important ones first and make sure the cover image is right before doing mass cleanup. Tiny detail, but it saves a lot of “why does this look differrent now?” moments.
Also, if you’re using iCloud Photos, edits sync everywhere. That’s useful, but also kinda dangerous if you change a ton at once and regret it later.
For bigger batches, yeah, best free iPhone cleaner app for removing Live Photos and freeing storage is worth a look, especially if you want something like Clever Cleaner to sort Live Photos faster without manually opening each one. I’d duplicate a few favorites first, just in case. Not elegant, but safer tbh.
One extra angle: if the Live Photos matter, duplicate the important ones first, then edit the copies. That gives you a safety net if iCloud syncs the change everywhere and you hate the result later. I’m slightly less relaxed than @sternenwanderer and @chasseurdetoiles about mass edits for that reason.
For bulk work, Clever Cleaner is practical.

Cons:
- Still requires a final decision on what to remove
- Third-party app, so some people will avoid that
- You should double-check key photos on favorites
@mikeappsreviewer is right only if you want the whole item gone. If you want to keep the picture, avoid straight deletion. Also, after converting, check storage later, because Photos sometimes takes a bit to recalculate space.
