My Mac-formatted HFS drive suddenly won’t mount, and I need to recover important files without making things worse. I’m looking for the safest and easiest HFS data recovery method, preferably with tools or steps that work on macOS.
First thing: don’t panic yet. Deleted files on an HFS or HFS+ Mac usually aren’t erased right away, even if you already emptied the Trash. macOS mostly just marks that disk space as available again. The actual file data can still be sitting there until something else gets written over it.
That means recovery is often possible, but the clock matters.
Stop using the drive
This is the biggest thing. Don’t copy files to it, don’t install apps on it, don’t keep using the Mac normally if the lost files were on the internal drive. Any new write activity can overwrite the space where those deleted files still exist.
If it’s an external drive, unplug it until you’re ready to scan it. If it’s your Mac’s internal drive, do as little as possible and install any recovery tool somewhere else.
Yes, it’s worth trying even without a backup
For normal accidental deletion, emptied Trash, or even some formatting situations, recovery software is exactly what you’d try first. The main exception is physical drive failure. If the drive is clicking, not spinning up, disconnecting constantly, or not appearing at all, that’s more of a professional recovery lab situation.
But if the drive still shows up in Disk Utility, there’s a decent chance software can find something.
A simple option: Disk Drill
Disk Drill is a pretty straightforward choice because you don’t have to mess with command-line tools, and you can scan and preview files before deciding whether to recover them.
Use it like this:
- Install it on a different drive. If you’re recovering the internal Mac drive, install Disk Drill on an external USB drive or another disk. If you’re recovering an external drive, install it on the Mac’s internal storage. Don’t install it onto the same drive you’re trying to recover from.
- Open Disk Drill and select the problem drive. Pick the drive that had the missing files.
- Run “Search for lost data.” Large drives can take a while. You can review results during the scan, but letting it finish usually gives you the best shot.
- Preview what it finds. Disk Drill groups results by type, like photos, documents, and videos. The preview option is useful because it lets you check whether the file is actually intact.
- Select the files you want back. Check the ones you need.
- Recover them to a different location. Don’t save recovered files back onto the drive you just scanned. Use another drive or a separate safe destination.
One detail about older HFS+ Macs
HFS+ journaling can sometimes help recovery tools figure out original file names and folder locations, not just raw file contents. That’s useful, but the journal doesn’t stick around forever. It gets updated as the drive is used, so waiting too long or continuing to use the Mac can reduce your chances.
If Disk Drill’s scan shows your files and the previews look good, that’s a strong sign. At that point, the main thing is recovering them to another drive before anything gets overwritten.
Do not run repair tools on it first just because Disk Utility offers the button. First Aid, fsck, or random “fix my drive” apps can change the HFS catalog/journal and sometimes make recovery harder if the directory is already damaged. I agree with @mikeappsreviewer that Disk Drill is a reasonable easy option, but if the files matter, the safer order is: stop using the drive, make a byte-for-byte image or clone to another disk if the drive is still readable, then scan that copy instead of the original. If the drive is making noise, dropping offline, or taking forever to read, skip the DIY scan and go to a recovery lab. Software recovery is for logical damage, not a dying drive.
The annoying catch is that “won’t mount” can mean the HFS volume is damaged, or it can just be a flaky USB enclosure/cable making the disk look worse than it is. Before paying for software or clicking any repair button, check whether Disk Utility shows the physical drive at all. If it does, don’t initialize it, don’t erase it, and don’t run First Aid yet. Try a different cable, port, or enclosure if it’s external. If the drive stays visible, the safest easy route is still image/clone first, then point Disk Drill or another recovery app at the copy. If it only appears for a few seconds or keeps disconnecting, stop testing it because repeated scans can turn a recoverable drive into a much harder job.
If this was a Time Machine drive, the “easiest” recovery path can get messy fast. Older HFS+ Time Machine backups use a lot of hard links, so a normal recovery scan may show piles of duplicate-looking folders, strange paths, or way more data than you expect. In that case, don’t assume the biggest scan result is the best one. Recover the actual files you need first, not the whole backup structure unless you have another huge drive ready.
I agree with the earlier advice about not running First Aid right away. Disk Utility repair can be useful after you have a copy, but before that it’s basically changing the scene of the accident. If the HFS catalog is damaged, “repairing” it may make the volume mount again, or it may throw away references that recovery software could have used.
For a safer easy method, I’d do this: connect the drive once, see if the physical disk appears, and if it reads steadily, make an image or clone to another disk with enough space. Then scan the image with Disk Drill or whatever recovery tool you prefer. Disk Drill is fine for this because it is easy to browse results and preview files, but don’t treat the preview screen as proof that every folder will come back perfectly. HFS recovery can sometimes restore the file contents but lose names, dates, or the original folder layout.
A small thing people forget: have the destination drive ready before you start. If you recover 600 GB of files and only have 120 GB free on your Mac, you’ll end up pausing, moving things around, and possibly reconnecting the bad drive more than necessary. Use a separate external drive formatted as APFS or exFAT if you need to read it on Windows later. Do not recover back onto the broken HFS drive.
If the drive is slow, clicking, heating up, or dropping off the bus, I would not keep trying different apps just to see which one finds more. That’s when the “easy” method stops being safe. For a drive that stays connected and sounds normal, clone/image first, scan the copy, recover to a third location. That’s the least exciting answer, but it’s the one least likely to make things worse.
