Why am I suddenly unable to download apps on my iPhone?

I’m having trouble downloading any apps on my iPhone, even ones I’ve installed before. The App Store either gets stuck on “Get”/“Install” or shows a spinning wheel forever, and nothing ever finishes downloading. I’ve checked my Wi‑Fi and storage, signed out and back into my Apple ID, and restarted the phone, but the problem is still there. What else can I try to fix this and get apps to download again?

This happend to me a few weeks ago. I fixed it by going through these step by step.

  1. Check the basics
    • Connect to a strong Wi‑Fi network.
    • Pause the download, then tap again.
    • Restart the iPhone and try once more.

  2. Check storage
    • Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
    • If you are under 2–3 GB free, delete some apps, photos, or videos.
Low storage often makes installs hang forever.

  3. Sign out and back into App Store
    • Settings > Your name > Media & Purchases > Sign Out.
    • Restart the phone.
    • Sign back in and try again.
This fixes a lot of stuck “Get/Install” issues.

  4. Check payment method
Even for free apps, App Store can bug out if your payment method is invalid.
    • Settings > Your name > Payment & Shipping.
    • Fix expired card or billing address errors.

  5. Check Content & Privacy Restrictions
    • Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
    • Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
    • Make sure Installing Apps is set to Allow.

  6. Date and time
If date or time is wrong, downloads often fail.
    • Settings > General > Date & Time.
    • Turn on Set Automatically.

  7. Reset network settings
If nothing works and Wi‑Fi is ok for other stuff.
    • Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
You will lose saved Wi‑Fi passwords.

  8. Test on mobile data
    • Settings > App Store.
    • Under Cellular Data, enable App Downloads.
    • Try on LTE/5G to see if Wi‑Fi is the issue.

If all that fails, you are likely looking at a system glitch.
Backup to iCloud or a computer, then do Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
This keeps your data but resets settings, which often clears App Store problems.

Couple more angles you can try that @caminantenocturno didn’t really touch, in case you’re still stuck in App Store purgatory:

  1. Check for a stuck app process
Sometimes it’s not the download, it’s a corrupted install attempt.
  • On the Home Screen, find any app that’s “Waiting,” “Loading,” or has the spinning circle.
  • Long‑press it and choose “Cancel Download” or “Delete App.”
  • Then go back to the App Store and try again.
If you see multiple stuck apps, clear all of them before retrying.
  1. Make sure you’re not in “Purchased with another Apple ID” hell
If the apps you’re trying to re‑download were originally installed with a different Apple ID (old work account, old region, shared family phone), the store can hang or act weird.
  • Go to App Store > your profile pic > Purchased.
  • Check if the app shows there under your current Apple ID.
If it doesn’t, you might be hitting a licensing issue, not a connection problem.
  1. Region / country problem
If you changed App Store country recently, some apps vanish or partially misbehave:
  • Settings > your name > Media & Purchases > View Account > Country/Region.
  • If you’re on a different country than before, that can explain why even old installs won’t behave. Sometimes they’ll just endlessly spin instead of giving a proper error.
  1. VPN, security apps, or DNS filters
This is a big one people skip. I’d actually disagree slightly with just resetting network settings first like some folks suggest. Before you blow away all your Wi‑Fi passwords:
  • Turn off any VPN apps.
  • Disable things like “private DNS,” DNS filter apps, or “security” / “privacy” apps that filter traffic.
  • If you’re using a work or school profile, check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. That profile can block Apple services silently. Temporarily remove or disable it if you can.
  1. iCloud & device trust issues
If you recently changed your Apple ID password or enabled Advanced Data Protection, sometimes the phone gets half‑logged‑in and weird stuff happens.
  • Settings > your name > scroll down to see if this iPhone has any “Verification Required” or “Update Apple ID Settings” warnings.
  • If you see that banner at the top of Settings, tap it and finish whatever it wants (password, verification code, etc.) before trying more app installs.
  1. Try a different Wi‑Fi network entirely
Not just mobile data like @caminantenocturno suggested. Some routers or guest networks block Apple’s CDN.
  • Go to a different place (friend’s house, office, coffee shop).
  • Connect to their Wi‑Fi and try downloading 1 small free app as a test, like a calculator or notes app.
If it works elsewhere, your home router or ISP is the villain. A simple router reboot or DNS change (to 1.1.1.1 / 8.8.8.8) can fix it.
  1. Check for an iOS update specifically for App Store bugs
App download bugs show up a lot in minor iOS updates.
  • Settings > General > Software Update.
  • If you’re one minor version behind, update first and then test downloads before doing more drastic stuff.
I’d do this before “Reset All Settings,” not after.
  1. Look at Screen Time’s “Always Allowed” and Focus modes
Even if you allowed installing apps like they said, Screen Time can still be a gremlin:
  • Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases (already covered).
  • Also go to Screen Time > App Limits and make sure the App Store or “All Apps & Categories” isn’t limited.
  • If you use Focus modes (Do Not Disturb, Work, etc.), temporarily turn all Focus off and try again. I’ve seen weird cases where a Focus mode with app filters messes with installing.

If none of this moves the needle and you’ve already tried their steps, you’re most likely looking at:

  • Corrupted App Store cache
  • Or a deeper iOS/App Store service bug

In that case:

  • Backup
  • Try signing out of iCloud entirely (not just Media & Purchases), restart, then sign back in
If even that fails, at that point I’d seriously consider a clean restore via computer instead of living with a broken App Store. It’s annoying as hell, but it usually nukes these ghost issues for good.
